As Nigeria continues her efforts at containing the spread of
the dreaded Corona virus, Wole Arisekola, the President of the Association of
Online Media Practitioners of Nigeria, AMPON and Publisher of The Street
Journal, has called on the Federal Government to ensure that online journalists
are protected.
Describing online journalists as frontline workers,
Arisekola opined that ‘online journalists should be considered for the
palliative packages being put together by the Federal Government and other agencies”.
Arisekola also stressed that online
journalists have been at the forefront of reportage since the pandemic started.
“Without them, people out there may not know what feats the medical experts
have achieved or how many cases are recorded per time. Now that the days of
having to wait till the following day to get abreast of information have gone,
online journalists have been disseminating information as and when due. It may
therefore be unfair not to consider them when frontline workers are being
spoken of vis a vis the COVID-19 pandemic”.
