A man has been arrested for shooting his pregnant wife dead
when a bullet reportedly ricocheted and hit her while he was trying to kill a
snake with a hunting rifle.
Ali El Arid, 28, escaped war-torn Syria to start a new life
for himself with his wife and their two children after getting the job caring
for livestock on a farm in the Seydisehir district of Konya province in central
Turkey.
He spotted a snake slithering into the bedroom at the family
home in the early hours of the morning, and grabbed his hunting rifle in order
to shoot it, he claims.
He says the bullet ricocheted and hit his wife, Zeyneb El
Arid in the back, causing her to collapse to the ground.
El Arid called an ambulance for his wife, who was six-months
pregnant.
It arrived and took her to the Seydisehir State Hospital,
but despite emergency surgery, she died.
The couple have two children, aged two and three.
The body of the victim was sent to Seydisehir State
Hospital's morgue for an autopsy.
Police are investigating the statement of Ali El Arid that
the shooting was an accident.
He is currently in investigative custody and it was not
revealed who is caring for his children.
