Court Grants El-Zakzaky, Wife Bail to Travel Abroad on Health Grounds

A High Court, sitting in Kaduna, on Monday asked the government to release the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim el-Zackzaky and his wife, Zeenat to enable them seek medical treatment in India.
El-Zakzaky's counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), had filed a suit seeking his client's release from detention to treat his sight and deteriorating health.

The 66-year-old leader of the IMN, who has been detained since 2015, and his wife are expected to be accompanied by officials of the Kaduna State Government on the trip to India.
After a clash between his followers and the army in December 2015, military men stormed Zakzaky's residence, killed his followers and injured him. His followers have clamoured for his release since then.
A march by Shiite Muslims calling for El-Zakzaky's release turned violent in June, resulting in the death of a number of people including a senior police officer and a journalist.
