Kola Balogun Floors Ajimobi, Emerges Oyo South Senator Elect

In what appears to be a major upset, the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was defeated by Mohammed Kola Balogun of the People's Democratic Party in the Oyo South Senatorial election. Ajimobi, who flew the All Progressives Congress' flag represented the district at the Senate from 2003 to 2007.

The results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that Kola Balogun came tops with a total of 105, 720 votes across the nine local government areas that make up the district while Senator Ajimobi, his closest rival polled 92,280. The incumbent Senator representing the district, Senator Soji Akanbi came third with 49,437 while Dr. Fola Akinosun had 13, 149 votes. The announcement was made by Wole Akinsola, the returning officer at the INEC collation centre located in Ibadan North Local Government Area.
The All Progressives Congress has however rejected the result of the Oyo South Senatorial election as the party's Publicity Secretary, Dr. Abdulazeez Olatunde stated that violence was recorded in Ibadan South East Local Government Area during the election. He also disclosed that the party has sent a petition to the appropriate authorities.
Olumuyiwa Makinde, who spoke on behalf of the PDP at the collation centre described it as a "victory for democracy".
