Mum, 21, Arrested For Dumping 12-Day-Old Baby Inside Pit Toilet

21-year-old Amudalat Taiwo has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for throwing her 12-day-old baby into a pit latrine.

According to DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Command's spokesman, "her arrest followed a complaint from her landlord, one Oshunshina Olawale who reported that one of his tenants at No.28, Isheri Street, Ilaro woke up early in the morning of June 20 and went to the toilet to ease herself only to hear the cry of a baby inside the pit toilet". 
He stated further that "on the strength of the complaint, the DPO, Ilaro Division, CSP Opebiyi Sunday led detectives to the scene where the latrine was broken and the baby was rescued.
On investigation it was discovered that the baby was given birth to by the suspect who was promptly arrested". Giving reasons for her action during investigation, she claimed that she is an orphan married to one Taiwo Owolabi who already has five children from his marriage to another woman.  
"She stated further that the husband is not taking care of her and the baby and since she had no means of catering for the newborn baby, she decided to do away with her", Oyeyemi disclosed.
He also confirmed that the husband has been arrested for his failure to provide for his wife and baby while the case has been transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department on the order of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspects.
Meanwhile, the Police spokesman disclosed in a statement that the baby is in stable condition at the Stella Obansanjo Motherless Babies' Home.
