The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on
Governor Rauf Aregbesola to pay the debt owed West African Examination
Council, WAEC so as not to ruin the lives of Osun school leavers.
The
party said though it recognises the fact that administration of Mr.
Rauf Aregbesola is indebted to many agencies and even individuals, but
urged it to pay the money due to WAEC, having allowed students in the
state sit for their papers on credit with the assurance that the state
government would pay.
The
party in a statement signed by its Director, Publicity and Strategy,
Prince Diran Odeyemi, said not paying the debt owed WAEC on time, will
jeopardize chances of many students that are awaiting result of getting
admission to continue their education in universities and polytechnics.
"For
the records, we want to inform the world that before students that sat
for WAEC in public schools could sit for their practicals, they had to
pay for specimens because of the refusal of the examination body to send
money to schools to buy them.
WAEC, we were told withheld money to buy practical specimens because Aregbesola was owing it huge sum of money.
We
advise that if Aregbesola can no longer manage to run the free education
programme he inherited from the PDP government for about 8 years with almost
80% passing rates in external examinations, he should shy away from
declaring state of emergency on Education in the state" the PDP said.
The
statement further reads: "taking exams on credit is another open
disgrace Osun is witnessing under the watch of Mr. Aregbesola.
Teachers
are being owned salaries and as a result, schools are shut for about 9
weeks. We cannot, but beg Mr. Governor to give education its deserved
attention in the state in the interest of the future of the our
children".
