Alhaji Gay who prided himself as a staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was a man "Yahoo Boys" and internet fraudsters hated with a lot of passion. As far back as five years ago, Alhaji Gay had been making his living, infamously as a self-acclaimed “police informant”. He however took things to the extreme when he started going to campuses across the country to arrest alleged fraudsters.
He usually watched out for students who were suspected to be into internet fraud, some of who he pounced on. Not a few of them had their laptops seized by the deceased till they allegedly "settled".. It was alleged at point that those who refused to settle him were often reported to the police. Many cooperated with him fore fear of being prosecuted.
It became clear to students of the Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso that Alhaji Gay was not working for the Nigeria Police Force when he was arrested around 2010 and detained for a couple of weeks.
Findings conducted by The Anchor Online however revealed that he pulled some strings and escaped from police custody in a manner that has not been explained till date. It was gathered that the situation was so bad for some officers in the Oyo State Command then that some of them faced the Inspector General’s disciplinary panel in Abuja over Alhaji Gay’s issue.
Having regained his freedom, he decided to lie low for some time and the next that was heard of him was that he was in Malaysia. It didn’t take long however before he returned to his old ways. He reportedly got into trouble with some Malaysia based Yahoo boys who attacked him. When Malaysia became too hot, he returned to Nigeria to continue his trade.
By that time, he had graduated into an EFCC informant, squealing on Yahoo Boys and perpetrators of other forms of fraud and allegedly extorting funds from them.
While the police continue to investigate the killing in the bid to unravel the motive behind it, efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command proved abortive till the time of filing the report.
