“Fayose and Obasanjo Rolled in The Mud Together” – Omoyele Sowore

Former Students Union Leader, political activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore recently disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s disdain for the Goodluck Jonathan administration might have arisen from factors other than Dr. Jonathan’s poor performance as President. He also pointed out that the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who has become very critical of the former President was one of the “friends” who “rolled in the mud” with Obasanjo when he was in office.

Sowore, who spoke on a television programme monitored in Lagos said “Jonathan was such a poor performer. I wouldn’t think that Obasanjo would be upset with anybody because he performed poorly, because he had some of the worst characters as his friends when he was in power. The likes of Fayose, Omisore, the old man that died in Ibadan, Adedibu, those were his people. Those are the dregs of this part of the world. They were rolling in the mud together.
So, it would be giving him too much credit to think that Jonathan’s performance is the reason he doesn’t like him. Obasanjo doesn’t care whether you are a dog or pig as long as he likes you, you are fine. But I think the idea that he didn’t relinquish power after one term might have pissed him off because he might probably have promised other people. Obasanjo is the male version of the drama queen, and I also think he did what he did preemptively because he might have been told that he was going to be ejected from the party at all levels. So before they got to him, he had already removed himself from the party”.
When Sowore was asked if he was confident that elections would hold on March 28, his response was “I am not sure, to be honest with you but I think a series of events happened that is almost making it impossible for us to have elections on March 28. Obasanjo is coming out blazing and he is revealing some of the secrets of President Jonathan and his kitchen cabinet, which is going to be a major factor. I would say that social media is also a major factor that is prevailing at this time and that is our sector that has made it impossible for these guys to be ahead of the populace in terms of so many of the things they could have done: Insidious things against the transition programme and elections. I won’t put it beyond them that they have other plans in place. Look at the issue of security for instance, the military is moving against Boko Haram but Boko Haram is getting more ferocious in some areas and I won’t be surprised if there are more bomb blasts in places that haven’t been experiencing it before. I think people who are against this election will do everything to frustrate it, including spreading the terror down south. There was an attack on an APC rally in Dame Patience Jonathan’s hometown, Okrika and the Niger Delta militants have also been primed to make some statements, so we are going to see a cascade of events. There is going to be a lot of spreading of fear that would make people start to rethink whether it is better to just postpone and have an Interim Government than to keep having election in which there would be bloodshed. I think they have made up their mind that they would do everything to frustrate it.
I am also seeing a very vigilant society where people are determined to have elections, so we’ll see what happens”.
