"Elections Must Go On", National Council of States Insists

The National Council of States, on Thursday, insisted that the 2015 general elections must go on as scheduled. Issues discussed at the meeting of the council which started around 11.30 am and ended8 hours later, included security challenges facing the country and the forthcoming elections.
Members of the council agreed that elections could be postponed in areas affected by insurgency.
All living past Heads of Government were at the meeting presided over by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan except former President Olusegun Obasanjo.


While briefing reporters after the meeting, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission  has told the council that it was ready to go on with the election and that the distribution of voters' cards was going on well.
Apart from the former Heads of Government, others in attendance include the Senate President, David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, and former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Musdafa Belgore.
The Governors of Anambra, Kogi, Katsina, Kano, Osun, Imo, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Niger, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Cross River, Enugu and Delta states were also at the meeting.
The Governors of Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Jigawa, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe as well as the  acting governor of Taraba were all there while Abia, Oyo and Borno State Governors were represented by their deputies.
