2014 in Retrospect: Knocks & Kudos

The year 2014 came with mixed fortunes for Nigeria and Nigerians. So many things happened with so many Nigerians deserving commendations for what they did while some Nigerians should also receive knocks for their deeds in 2014.
Knocks:
Boko Haram
The hardest knock goes to the Boko Haram terrorist organization for the continuous killing, bombing  and wanton destruction perpetrated by its members in the course of the year. Apart from having defied all laws of decency and order, the group went on to kidnap more than 200 girls who Abubakar Shekau claimed to have sold off in marriage.

The Federal Government
Despite promises that have come over and over again, the power situation and some other challenges still affect the country. The security situation has also worsened with terrorists hoisting their flag on Nigerian soil. The FG seems to have left the abducted Chibok girls to their fate in the hands of terrorists.
If not for anything, the Federal Government should send its representative for 144 knocks for embarrassing Nigerians by falling for a fake ceasefire deal with Boko Haram terrorists.
Super Eagles
We won’t call them Super Chickens but for dashing the hopes of Nigerians with their failure to qualify for the 2015 Nations Cup, the Super Eagles deserve very hard knocks.  Despite being defending champions, they had a poor showing at the World Cup, not going beyond the usual Second Round. At the AFCON qualifiers, the Eagles lost and drew matches they should win.

Ekiti State House of Assembly
For turning standing logic on its head and allowing 7 members to impeach a Speaker supported by 18 members, legislators from Ekiti have shown that “stomach infrastructure” has taken place and the State shall indeed “rice” again. They deserve nothing but heavy knocks.

Governor Ayodele Fayose
When he stormed the premises of the High Court in Ado Ekiti with hundreds of “supporters”, who went out of control, it became a big issue as courts had to close down in the state. Not a few people suffered the inconvenience that followed. But since His Excellency is covered by immunity, a few feeble knocks would do.

IGP Suleman Abba
No Inspector General of Police has been this partisan in a very long while
. For personally taking it upon himself to declare the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives vacant after the defection of Honourable Waziri Tambuwal from the Peoples Democratic Party to All Progressives Congress, we hereby sentence the Inspector General to a dozen hard knocks.
House of Reps Members
Members of the House of Representatives did a “heroic” job of scaling the fence of the National Assembly complex. Checks have revealed that if they hadn’t done that, Mr. Speaker would probably have lost his seat that day.
But because they have succeeded in teaching the younger generation of Nigerians extra-legislative activities, we hereby advocate for serious knocks on their honourable heads.

The Political Class
Nigerian politicians also deserve knocks for trading blames instead of putting heads together to solve the issues affecting the country.
Stephen Keshi
Every coach is as good as his last match. For being so Nigerian that he decided not to quit, even when it became obvious that over 160 million Nigerians no longer want his services, we sentence Stephen Keshi to one knock for every goal scored against the Super Eagles in 2014.

Their Excellencies
At the fund raising for the President’s campaign, some Governors donated a billion Naira to the cause. Some of them were however found to owe workers in their states. The affected Governors should stand in front of their different offices and receive a knock each from every aggrieved civil servant.

Dame Patience Jonathan
For dragging the "unconstitutional" Office of the First Lady in the mud with her summons to government officials which culminated in the "there is God o" tragi-comedy, the First Lady deserves a knock. We will give her that honour though as the knock can only be administered by Mr. President himself.

Kudos
The Super Falcons and Falconets
The Super Falcons won the African Women Championship and the U-20 Female team too made Nigerians proud. Kudos to them for their feats. They did what the men found difficult. Truly, it was a case of what a man can do…
Professor Wole Soyinka
For his warnings to politicians and government officials and for coming out to say he was treated for cancer, Prof has encouraged lots of Nigerians, especially those battling cancer. Kudos Bros Kongi.
Dr. Stella Adadevoh
Just like her grandfather, Herbert Macaulay, one of the Nigeria’s revered nationalists, Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh was selfless in her resolve to ensure that the Ebola Virus was contained. She paid the ultimate price after having ensured that Patrick Sawyer, the first Ebola patient in Nigeria did not do too much damage with the virus. Kudos to her and all other medical personnel in Lagos, Port Harcourt and other places who fought to make Nigeria Ebola-free.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi
The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State stunned many politicians when he called to congratulate the man who floored him at the polls just hours after results were announced. It was that election that brought “stomach infrastructure” into Nigeria’s vocabulary.
Ray Power
Nigeria’s first independent radio station scored another first at their awards by bringing Remedies, a group that was the hottest item in Nigeria’s music industry years ago back together. The trio of Tony Tetuila, Eddy Montana and Eedris Abdulkarim came together for the first time in 10 years just to perform at the station’s 21st anniversary.
