Man, 34 in Court For Raping Cameroonian in Lagos

Fabian Anyanwu, a 34-year-old Nigerian was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly defiling a 22-year-old Cameroonian lady.
Anyanwu, a resident of 721 Road, D Close, Block 2, Festac Town, Lagos,
was arraigned before a Senior Magistrate, Patrick Ademokoya on a two-count charge of assault and rape.
Corporal John Iberedem, the police prosecutor told the court that the accused committed the offences on August 15 at the said address. He said the defendant after assaulting the young lady, forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
According to him, the plaintiff said the accused offered her a free ride under the guise of going to her direction. He said when it was time for her to alight from the car; the accused refused to stop and drove her to his house, where he assaulted and defiled her.
Iberedem told the court that it was the neighbours of the accused that called the police after hearing the complainant screaming. He informed the court that the offences were contrary to section 171 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
When the charges were read, the accused pleaded not guilty. He was thereafter granted bail in the sum of N20, 000, with one surety in like sum. The case has been adjourned till September 18 for mention.
If found guilty, Anyanwu might be facing a minimum of three years in jail for assault as stipulated by Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State. Section 258 on the other hand recommends life imprisonment as the penalty for rape.
