Tinubu Wins Presidential Poll, Promises Fairness


The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Nigeria's electoral umpire, in the early hours of Wednesday declared Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the candidate of Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress, as the winner of Saturday’s presidential election.

Asiwaju Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat 17 other candidates, thus meeting the first constitutional requirement to be declared the winner.

He also scored over 25 per cent of the votes cast in 30 states, more than the 24 states constitutionally required.

As announced by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party came second with a total of 6,984,520 votes. Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third with 6,101,533 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

In the keenly contested election, Tinubu, Atiku and Obi won in 12 states while Dr. Kwankwaso won only in Kano State. 

The President-elect, Asiwaju Tinubu, in his acceptance speech promised to be fair to all Nigerians. "I thank the Nigerian people for their abiding belief in our democracy. I shall be a fair leader to all Nigerians.I will be in tune with your aspirations, charge up your energies and harness your talents to deliver a nation that we can be proud of", he said. 

While expressing that his respect for his opponents was intact, Tinubu also noted that "political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance".
