How Tinubu Edged Out Osinbajo, Others To Win APC Primaries

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday edged out 13 other aspirants to clinch the party's presidential ticket ahead of the February 25, 2023 presidential election. At the keenly contested shadow election, Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State polled  1,271 votes, beating Honourable Rotimi Amaechi, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to the second and third positions respectively. The former had 316 votes, against the Vice President’s 235 votes.

The primary elections were not devoid of dramas of different sorts. The Osinbajo camp had responded to former Governor Governor Kashim Shettima's jab with the erection of a popcorn and ice cream stand at the venue. The stands were clearly marked with the Vice President 's name. Shettima had described Osinbajo as a good man but was quick to point out that good men were better as ice cream sellers than as politicians.

Governor Yahaya Bello also made news with his clear snub of the party's National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The rousing welcome given to Asiwaju Tinubu would be spoken about for some time to come. Shouts of "Jagaban, Jagaban" deafened the Eagle Square on his arrival. He came in with a multitude of Governors.

Before the commencement of voting, nine aspirants stepped down, with eight of them asking their supporters to vote for Tinubu, while one supported Osinbajo.

Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State, Senators Àjàyí Boroffice, Ken Nnamani, Ibikunle Amosun and Honourable Dimeji Bankole, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and Chief Godswill Akpabio all asked their supporters to vote for Tinubu. The only woman in the race, Mrs Uju Ken-Ohanenye too did likewise.
