The duo of Salam Faruk, 18 and Sunday Okechukwu, 19, became guests of the Ogun State Police Command, following their arrest around
9.30 pm on 28th November 2019. Police authorities disclosed that the young men
were ‘dispossessing commuters of their belongings on the notorious Long Bridge
along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway’ when they were arrested.
In a statement, the spokesman of the Command, DSP Abimbola
Oyeyemi made it known that “policemen on a joint patrol operation co-ordinated
by the Area Commander Owode-Egba, ACP Irimiya Asimiya arrested them while
trying to rob motorists who got stuck in traffic as a result of the road
construction work going on".
Oyeyemi stated further that "the
policemen, who are on foot patrol of the
area sighted the two suspects who were armed with a dagger with which they
were forcing commuters to surrender their properties, they were subsequently chased and arrested
before they could jump under the bridge".
He also stated that on interrogation, both suspects confessed that they to the bridge from Lagos for the purpose of robbing motorists held in traffic.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kenneth Ebrimson has ordered the immediate
transfer of the suspects to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for discreet investigation. "The CP also directed 24-hour surveillance patrol on all the
highways across the state so as to checkmate the activities of hoodlums who
might want to disturb innocent commuters on the highways", Oyeyemi stated.
