Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Tourism and Values
Orientation, Aare Muyiwa Olumilua, has said that the Fayemi-led administration
does not believe or engage in propaganda, but would continue to set the records
straight, and let the people know the correct position of issues at all times.
Aare Olumilua, who made the assertion in Ado-Ekiti, during a
public lecture organised by the Federation of Ekiti State Students' Union on the
“Effect of Press and Information on Education in The Nigerian Educational
System”, stated that "Governor Fayemi runs an all-inclusive government and
we operate an open door policy in order to keep the people informed of our
plans and programmes".
Describing the Governor as a media friendly personality and
a communications guru, Olumilua stressed that Governor Kayode Fayemi has always
maintained a very cordial relationship with members of the fourth estate of the
realm.
The Commissioner noted that the media has immensely reduced
the stress of knowledge acquisition, thereby making the process of teaching and
learning very smooth and almost seamless.
He however lamented the effect of fake news on the society,
adding that unprofessional journalism has caused enormous damage to the polity.
"It is worthy of note that in recent times, media,
especially new media, has made knowledge acquisition more smooth and almost
seamless.
In fact, the world has become a global village, thereby
accessing information and important data has become very easy. Today, students doing
research could easily access such at any point where they are.
All they need is access to the internet. Also, global issues
such as climate change, world politics, and economy are available through the aid
of the media, which simply means, having all the necessary information we need
at our fingertips has made education much easier", Olumilua stated.
He added that, “However, every beautiful thing has its ugly
side as recently, media has also become a tool of destruction, of which one of the
major concerns or negative effects of media is the erosion of its value of
trust. Today, fake news has become rife and it is causing enormous damage to
the polity. In Nigeria today, our ethno-religious gap appears to have become
wider through the negative effect of using the media in spreading hate and
divisive messages".
"Another very fresh example is the xenophobic attacks
carried out against Africans by black South Africans. The media has been successfully
used as a tool to exacerbate the situation, thereby resulting to reprisals on
business interests assumed to belong to South Africa and South Africans in the affected countries,
including here in Nigeria", the Commissioner posited.
Soliciting the continued support of all stakeholders in the
Ekiti project, Olumilua assured that the Kayode Fayemi-led administration would
leave no stone unturned in achieving the desired goals.
