Ekiti State Government has raided streets of Ado-Ekiti, the
state capital and Ikere Ekiti to remove more than fifty destitute, beggars, miscreants
and lunatics for necessary rehabilitation before reuniting them with their
families to begin normal lives.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development and
Gender Empowerment, Chief (Mrs.) Moji Fafure who spoke with journalists in her office
after the exercise in Ado-Ekiti said the move became necessary to clear the
streets of such deranged people that were becoming a nuisance and could pose
threat to public peace.
The Commissioner, who noted that the Ekiti State Governor,
Dr. Kayode Fayemi has not limited his benevolence to healthy people alone,
thanked the Governor for releasing money on monthly basis to clothe, feed and purchase
various drugs for the persons with disabilities.
Chief Fafure assured that the deranged people removed off
the streets were taken to the Government Rehab Centre for needed care and rehabilitation
after which they will be released to their relations if they are ready to sign
undertakings that they would not be found roaming the streets again, especially
the state capital and its environs.
She explained that government officials have held meetings
with stakeholders, especially the Seriki of the Hausa Community on how to cater
for the deranged and persons with disabilities. She went on to express her satisfaction
at the conduct of the caregivers at the Government Rehab Centre and the way
they care for the inmates with several other incentives to ensure that they
live normal life.
The Executive Secretary, Office for Disability Affairs, Dr.
Ayodele Ibikunle thanked the Governor of the state for creating a special office
to cater for the welfare of Persons with Disabilities in the State and for his
prompt responses and approval for things that have to do with caring for them.
Dr. Ibikunle who pleaded with Ekiti people not to treat
physically and mentally challenged family members with disdain but give them
the needed special care and attention assured Ekiti residents that the rescue
operation would be a regular exercise to clear the streets off the nuisance and
to give succor to the indigent, deranged and people with disabilities.
