A Magistrate Court sitting in Ebuta-Metta, Lagos State has
ordered that Ogunyemi Olalekan, the police Inspector who was dismissed in
connection with the shooting of Kolade Johnson, be remanded in prison custody.
Ogunyemi was arraigned in court on Friday by the Criminal
Investigation Department of the Lagos State Police Command.
According to the prosecutor, Ogunyemi’s offence contravened
Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. He thereafter urged the
magistrate to remand the accused person for 30 days. The defence counsel
however pleaded that the remand period be reduced to 14 days.
The magistrate, Mrs. A. Salawu ordered that the suspect be
remanded at Ikoyi Prisons, pending the advice from the state Director of Public
Prosecution as she adjourned the trial till May 6.
Ogunyemi Olalekan’s arraignment came after he had been
dismissed and recommended for trial sequel to an Orderly Room Trial he
underwent over the shooting and subsequent death of Kolade Johnson, a football
fan in Mangoro area of Lagos.
At the Orderly Room Trial, the police found Olalekan guilty
of discreditable conduct by “shooting and killing Kolade Johnson,” among other
offences. The police could however not find any evidence linking Sergeant Orji,
who was accused alongside Ogunyemi to the shooting. He was thus discharged and
acquitted accordingly.
