SDP Calls For Rejection of Oyo Council Polls Timetable

The Oyo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party, SDP,  has described the guidelines and timetable released by the state's Independent Electoral Commission, OYSIEC on Monday for the conduct of Local Government and Local Council Development Authority elections in the state as nothing but a ruse aimed at elongating the tenure of illegally appointed caretaker chairmen in the state.

In a release signed by the party's Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Akeem Azeez, the SDP wondered how a serious election commission could order primaries to be held within 48 hours after the timetable was released to the members of the public.


Azeez reckoned that "even the elections Abacha organized were better organised than what the APC led Government is planning to force on the peace loving people of Oyo State".

He bemoaned what he described as the "despotic-like-attitude of the commission's chairman who refused to call a stakeholders meeting of all political parties in the state to assess the readiness, challenges, security and prospect if any exists in the state, but orders everyone around as if the people of the state are accountable to the ruling party.

They need to be told the reverse is the case".

"It is very pathetic that despite that it is taking the All Progressives Congress led government in Oyo state about six years to allow people of the state to make their choice in the third tier of government which is closest to them yet they are still giving us reasons to doubt their readiness to conduct a free and fair elections " lamented the SDP scribe.

Alhaji Azeez enjoined all political parties in the state to come together with one voice by rejecting the obnoxious local government guidelines as released, and call for a more feasible guideline that will promote internal democracy in the parties involved and guarantee a free and fair Local Government election in the state.
