Oyo Lawmakers Shun Emergency Sittings as Financial Crisis Bites Harder

The Oyo State House of Assembly has again found itself in the news for the wrong reason. The Anchor Online has gathered that members of the Assembly have on at least two separate occasions shunned emergency sittings convened by the speaker, Hon. Michael Adeyemo.
Checks revealed that majority of the lawmakers including All Progressives Congress (APC) members decided to shun the sittings because of the financial crisis that has taken its toll on the lawmakers.
The Anchor Online's investigation revealed that further following the reception of a letter from the Governor Abiola Ajimobi requesting the confirmation of tenure elongation for the local government caretaker chairmen by three months, the Speaker, Hon. Michael Adeyemo summoned an emergency sitting slated for Friday, 15th of July, 2016.

However, as a result of inability of the majority of the lawmakers to show up for the sitting, Honourable Adeyemo was left with no other option than to reschedule the sitting for Monday, 18th July.
There was a repeat of the situation on Monday, as only a few honourable lawmakers were available for the sitting.
While some have opined that the lawmakers may not be favourably disposed to the elongation of the tenure of the Caretaker Chairmen by the Governor, especially when he had promised to conduct council polls by September, sources within the assembly disclosed that the House is facing very serious financial issues. The source added that the situation, if not properly managed and addressed promptly will worsen the communication gap that has already been created between the leadership of the legislature and the management.
Some lawmakers have in time past expressed their displeasure over the way the governor has been treating them. Their complaints bordered mostly on their various yet to be paid allowances and official cars.
To prevent a recurrence of the boycott of sittings that took place late last year, the House has postponed its resumption which had earlier been scheduled for July 12.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement either from the leadership of the house or the management on why the resumption was adjourned, as well as why the emergency sittings failed to hold.
