How Do I Get Back on My Feet After Falling?

  Tunde Mabinuori

1.       Acknowledge and confess your sins:  The Bible says in Proverbs 28:13 that “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy”. Acknowledge your sin before God and forsake it totally. Give the devil no joy by wallowing in self-pity or playing the blame game. Stand on your feet and fight.

2.       Recognize the red flags: One day, I happened to be in a vehicle at night along a particular highway which I was not familiar with. The highway was full of potholes but the driver navigated with ease by dodging the potholes. I asked him how he managed to do that without bumping into any of the potholes. “I pass along this route everyday and I have mentally memorized where all the potholes are , so I can’t fall into them”. This is the same way of saying that we should know our weaknesses and try to avoid them at all costs.

3.       Confess your sin to an accountability partner: We all need accountability partners. These are people to whom you can be accountable. They may be your spiritual mentors. You need to talk to them so that they can help you with the word of God and pray for your restoration. Atimes, it may be people whom you have offended.

4.       Trace how you fell: (Revelation 2:5)- You need to trace the chain of events that aided your fall and watch or guide against them not to occur again.

5.       Submit yourself for discipline where necessary: An important step for getting back to your feet is to submit oneself for discipline. Where someone is either stubborn or ashamed to submit to discipline, he cannot be truly restored. (Galatians 6:1)

6.       Learn to forget and accept the forgiveness of God:  There are some people who live all through their lives in regret of the sins they committed even after asking for and obtaining forgiveness from God. They find it difficult to forgive themselves. Moses, David and Paul can qualify to be murderers, yet God forgave them and they forgave themselves of all the evils they did and still fulfilled their purposes in life.

7.       Despise the shame: Don’t mind what people will say. For you to bounce back from your fallen state, you must learn to ignore the side comments and mixed feelings of the people. Some will be disappointed; some will sympathize with you while some will mock you. You probably do not know who falls into where. If you want to live your life by the feelings of people towards you, I am afraid you may never move forward in your life.
