Former House of Reps Member from Kogi State and
Senator-elect, Otunba Dino Melaye has challenged President Jonathan on what he
described as “illegal extra time appointments”. Melaye disclosed on Friday that
the sack of the former Inspector General of Police, Suleman Abba is illegal and
unconstitutional.
“ I wonder why President Goodluck Jonathan is dishing out
illegal political appointment even in the night of his tenure as president of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is desperation to further expand his desire
and coast for unconstitutionality and myopic political miscalculation”, Melaye
said.
He continued that “on the removal and appointment of the
Inspector General of Police. It is very clear in section 216(2) of the 1999
constitution as amended that before an I G can be sacked the President must
consult with the Nigerian Police Council. This was not done and therefore
invalidates the removal and appointment of both Suleiman and Arase respectively”.
Melaye who posted the message via his Twitter handle also
pointed out that “Secondly the appointment of Mr Peter Obi, former Governor of
Anambra State as Chairman of Nigeria Stock Exchange is an abuse of Law and
flagrant disregard to the rule of law. The Investment and Security Act is
crystal clear on who is qualified to be chairman of the Security and Exchange
Commission. By the Act, anyone to be chairman must have 15years experience in
the stock exchange industry.
Peter Obi by all standards is grossly not qualified
to be chairman and I will test the law in this regard. There is also similar
violation in the appointment of Junior Bayaro as DG of SEC because his
appointment by law is subject to approval and confirmation of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Time for
change is here and we must all sit up and start doing things rightly.
We must be the change we all preach. Join the change
movement. Say no to impunity and abuse of law.
God bless Nigeria”.
