Ogun Police Arrest Fulani Herdsmen for Armed Robbery

Police operatives attached to the Ilupeju Sabo Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested some Fulani herdsmen who robbed residents of Atoba Estate in Sabo area of Abeokuta at gun point some days after the operation in Abeokuta.

Members of the community, who had placed the suspected armed robbers under surveillance, sighted the robbers while rearing their herd of cattle around the area and were able to identify them as the robbers who robbed them and carted away their belongings some weeks back.

 
While confirming the arrest of the herdsmen, the PRO the Command, DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed in a statement that “the community leaders contacted the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area, CSP Gbenga Megbope, who led his anti-robbery team to the scene where the robbers were arrested. The arrested herdsmen led police to their hide out in a jungle called Igbo Olodumare along Igboora Road Ogun state where additional two Fulani herdsmen were arrested and guns with cartridges were recovered from them. Other weapons recovered from them include some cutlasses, expended cartridges, assorted charms and dummy guns”.

The robbers had allegedly terrorized the people of the area and commuters as well as other road users along Igboora and Ayetoro roads before their arrest. Some members of the community who spoke on condition of anonymity appreciated the police for the arrest and their ability to recover the suspects' dangerous weapons that had been a threat to the whole community.

DSP Adejobi gave the names of the arrested suspects as Haruna Ibrahim, Usman Burani and Haruna Usman.

The Acting Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, DCP Haliru Gwandu has directed that the matter be immediately transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Eleweran Abeokuta for thorough investigation. He also assured the good people of Ogun State of adequate protection of lives and property as he disclosed that the command will not relent in its efforts to achieve effective policing of the state.
 
 The Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Haliru Gwandu also advised members of the public to always alert the police and other security agencies around them whenever some individuals or groups are suspected to enable the police take necessary action.
