The last has definitely not been heard about the political logjam
in Taraba State as Nigeria’s apex court has sacked the Acting Governor of the state,
Garba Umar. The court also ordered the reinstatement of the state’s former
Deputy Governor, Alhaji Sani Danladi who was impeached by the Taraba State
House of Assembly in October 2012.
The justices were unanimous in the judgment which held that
the impeachment panel set up by the House of Assembly to investigate the then
Deputy Governor as it snubbed his court papers which he served to challenge the
panel’s composition.
While delivering the lead judgment, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta
set aside the rulings delivered by both the Taraba State High Court and the
Court of Appeal which had dismissed Danladi’s suit. The Supreme Court held that
the lower courts should have resolved the issue of fair hearing in favour of
Danladi.
After his impeachment which was undertaken about three weeks
before the air crash that involved Governor Danbaba Suntai, Garba Umar was
appointed as the Deputy Governor and after the crash, he was named as the
Acting Governor of Taraba State.
