WHO Declares Nigeria "Ebola Free"

Nigeria was on Monday declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization after a 42 day period with no new case of the disease.
While speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Rui Gama Vaz, a representative of WHO said "Nigeria is now free of Ebola. This is a spectacular success story which shows that Ebola can be contained. But we must be clear that we have only won a battle, the war will only end when West Africa is also declared free of Ebola.”

Nigeria’s first Ebola case was Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian diplomat who took ill at the airport on arrival in Lagos on July 20.  Sawyer infected a number of people, including medical personnel who took care of him. In all, Nigeria had 20 cases and recorded 8 deaths.
The declaration of Nigeria as an Ebola free country came after a similar declaration in Senegal.

The rampaging Ebola Virus Disease has killed more than 4, 500 people in West Africa.
