Lightning Strike Kills 3 Teenagers in Ogun

Though some found the rain that fell in Abeokuta and environs on Friday, 10th October, 2014 soothing, three families will forever remember the rain as one that brought the lives of three teenagers to an abrupt end.

At about 6.45, during the heavy rainfall, lightning struck and killed the trio of Sunday Mulero,13,Dare Olaifa,15, and Sodiq Segun,15, at Ijale Ijaka Street in Ijoun, Ayetoro area of Ogun state.


The Police PRO of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi who confirmed the incident disclosed that information made available to him by the DPO in charge of the Aiyetoro Division revealed that the young boys were "playing "outside their house when they were struck and killed instantly by lightning.

Adejobi told The Anchor that “the Divisional Police Officer and his men who responded to distress calls put to them, rushed down to the scene to possibly rescue the teenagers but they were confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. The corpses were kept in the mortuary for necessary actions”.

The Commissioner of Police Ogun State, CP Ikemefuna Okoye described the incident as “unfortunate”. He also sympathized with the bereaved families and prayed for God's mercies and protection over other members of the affected families.

The Police boss seized the opportunity to advise the general public to learn from the past so as to adjust for the future. He also urged parents to warn their children to desist from playing under heavy rainfall or engage themselves in any "dangerous" activities that could make their lives unsafe. He noted that such incidents had occurred on many occasions in Ogun State and in many other states.
